What are the Benefits of Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a versatile skincare ingredient with wide-ranging benefits. It’s no wonder it makes the list of dermatologist-recommended skincare ingredients.

What is niacinamide?

Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3 or nicotinamide, is a water-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in skin health. It is found in many foods, including meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts, and seeds, but can also be applied topically for a range of skin benefits.

What are the benefits of niacinamide for skin?

When we say that niacinamide is a multitasking ingredient, we aren’t kidding. The many benefits for your skin include:

    • Brightening: Niacinamide can help to brighten skin and help fade troublesome dark spots from sun damage.

    • Strengthening the skin barrier: Niacinamide can help to strengthen the skin barrier, which is the outermost layer of the skin that protects it from damage. This can help to prevent moisture loss.

    • Hydrating the skin: Niacinamide can help improve skin hydration by increasing the production of natural moisturizing factors (NMFs).
NMFs are essential for keeping the skin hydrated and plump.

    • Targets inflammation: Niacinamide has anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce redness, swelling, and irritation. This makes it a good choice for people with acne, rosacea, or eczema.

    • Improves skin texture: Niacinamide can help to smooth out the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It can also help to improve the overall texture of the skin, making it look smoother and more radiant.

    • Antioxidant effects: Niacinamide also has antioxidant properties that can help protect cells from the effects of oxidative stress.

      How to use niacinamide

Niacinamide is a skincare powerhouse that’s easy to use. It’s suitable for all skin types and can be applied twice daily, morning and night. Niacinamide can be found in a variety of products including cleansers, serums, moisturizers, and spot treatments.

When to apply niacinamide depends on what type of product you’re using it in. If it’s in a cleanser, that’s going to be the first product in your routine. If it’s in a serum, use that after cleansing, starting with the thinnest serum and moving to the thickest serum. If it’s in your spot treatment, you’ll do that before moisturizing.

Although niacinamide is generally tolerated well, as with any new product, always start out by testing it on a small area of your skin to ensure that there is no adverse reaction to the product.
